Mawson's Hut Cape Denison Antarctica

Mawson’s Huts historic site is a special place requiring special treatment. The site is internationally recognised for its historic, archaeological, social, aesthetic, environmental and scientific values.

The Mawson’s Hut Foundation was formed in 1996 to save and conserve this historic site.The Foundation has been involved with fiveconservation expeditions to Cape Denison, working in partnership with the Australian Government through the Minister for Environment and Heritage, the Australian Antarctic Division and the Australian Heritage Division. 

Following several sporadic attempts in the 1970’s and 1980’s to stabilise the deteriorating fabric, over the past 10 years the Foundation has achieved some outstanding results, including most recently a
re-roof of the main hut.  The design team required a robust material that would withstand the rigours of the Antarctic conditions whilst also providing vital air permeability to manage the high levels of moisture.  

Due to its high vapour permeability, tear strength and cold temperature durability, Proctor’s Roofshield was the perfect solution. Roofshield allows vapour to pass through but stops water from penetrating back into the system.

The Proctor Roofshield is easy to install as it does not require the use of any special protective clothing or equipment to install, compared to other materials which can be very cumbersome and require special precautions.
